A bored genius, Light by chance locates a book with the words "Death Note" written on top of it's cover. This book was dropped by a Shinigami with the purpose of a human finding it. Bringing the book home and reading it's rules causes Light to realize this book has the power to kill anyone who's name is written in the book. Wary at first, Light jots down the name of a petty bank robber in his book and to his shock the man dies of a heart attack. Prior to the rules, after a name is written down without a cause of death as well after forty seconds the person in the pages of the Death Note will die from a cardiac arrest. Wondering if this death was truly due to his writing it in the Death Note, Light keeps the book on his person and when a young girl is being attack and he overhears the attacker's name, he jots it down in the Death Note along with 'traffic accident.' It comes as a shock to him when the attacker gets hit by a bus - however it reveals that the Death Note is actually functional. This creates Light's obsession with creating a world rid of criminal activity. He wants to create a Utopia with himself as it's new leader. With a list of Japan's most brutal criminals at his hands, Light writes each of their names into the Death Note with no causes of death so that cardiac arrest will not look suspicious. However, when the criminals begin to drop dead one by one suspicions arise and the police force summons the legendary detective L to track down who is responsible for their deaths. On a live televised program 'L' challenges this 'Kira' person to kill him and when the man who at the time is posing to be L dies, they see this as a definite threat on the police force from Kira. Although he evades their suspicious minds for a while, Light remains as one of the top suspects in the "Kira Case." * As a prime suspect in the "Kira Case," Light runs away from home with a letter of a tearful goodbye which is all lies. He tells them that he is upset with the Japan police force and can't take them inquiring on his family anymore and that he wishes to be left out of it. However, this tearful goodbye is not really a 'run away' letter - it is a false suicide letter so that L and the other officers would not realize he left the country. With a fake passport, and a disguise he manages to make it past the airport security and flees to Arcadia. ...With the Death Note.
